FACE

I talked to my friend Mary recently who has been on the fence about homeshooling and she said that she recently changed her mind on finding out about the Noah Curriculum.  It is one that is Christ centered, but not just a fill in the blank, but very interactive learning process.  The other good thing is that you can use it with every child, not using up materials and needing to buy more for each child.  The website is www.face.net, so check it out.  I ordered some free information, and got a free DVD to look at, which I will soon.

A BEKA book display

Yesterday I went to an A BEKA book display and was very impressed by their material. The representative told me that this company has been in the business the longest and they seem to have a lot of good material even for 2 to 3 year olds. Another lady came up to me and said that her three children have been in since the beginning and have tested out of every grade level, she and her children have really enjoyed this program.

So I believe we are going to purchase some of the books for the boys and try to share some of the educational display items. I was thinking that they will be also good for the younger children once they reach the appropriate age. I am excited to be actually starting down this journey and still plan on doing a lot more research and looking at supplemental material as the kids get older.

Let's keep on going

Let's look at a few more. BHI Books & Publishing, Your online resource for teaching Bible, Spelling, Reading, History & Economics. This is interesting because it seems a little old school, but also gives a two day course on the program itself and teaches the teachers.

Bob Jones University Press is another one that has a pretty extensive website. It has distance learning and a few different ways to get homeschool taught at your home. They have workshops for teachers and have a lot of interesting books even if not homeschooling through this program. They even seem to have a music program to learn from.

I did not look too close to see how much these programs cost, but I think it is intersting to think of do we want to do most of the work ourselves, or is there a DVD or alternative place to get some of the learning from. Do we want a main school to record and keep track of testing and scores, or is that something we should take care of ourselves? Just a thought about it.

A California court order that essentially banned homeschooling in the state has been vacated, and the judges who issued the ruling will hear further arguments on the status of parents who want to teach their own children.

WND broke the story in February of an appeals court order in Los Angeles against the family of Phillip and Mary Long.

The Longs say they have homeschooled because of an anti-Christian bias in public schools. The ruling stemmed from a juvenile proceeding that already had been closed by the court when court-appointed attorneys for their children appealed in an attempt to ban homeschooling. The ruling from Appeals Court Judge H. Walt Croskey granted the attorneys' wishes.

The court ruling said: "We find no reason to strike down the Legislature's evaluation of what constitutes an adequate education scheme sufficient to promote the 'general diffusion of knowledge and intelligence. … We agree … 'the educational program of the State of California was designed to promote the general welfare of all the people and was not designed to accommodate the personal ideas of any individual in the field of education.'"

The appeals ruling said California law requires "persons between the ages of six and 18" to be in school, "the public full-time day school," with exemptions being allowed for those in a "private full-time day school" or those "instructed by a tutor who holds a valid state teaching credential for the grade being taught."

The decision sent shock waves through the homeschooling community across the nation, and a variety of groups jumped into action, including the Home School Legal Defense Association, which worked with other groups on a petition for rehearing before the same court.

The next two

Sorry it has been a little over a week, but lets look at the next one. A2 Homeschool Curriculum is the next on the list. It looks like it covers all grades for one price, but I am not sure if it will need some additional beefing up for the kids. Give it a few moments to check out.

The one after that is Alpha Omega Publications. It looks like it has a few different options within it and it has been in business for 30 years.

I know Janelle mentioned an awesome resource in Stacy and I look forward to meeting her. It will be good to see what good and bad she has found, and maybe some of the in and outs of working in NY state.

Lets start at the beginning

Most of the information that I am starting off with I am getting from this website called, "Exploring Homeschooling".There are a lot of websited like this out there with tons of information, this is just the first one that I looked at. It has a whole list of Christian Cirriculum, and the first on their list is A Beka Book. I think that Mom mentioned that Joe and I started off with this when we were at Christian Life, and I know that we got off to a good start with reading through it. This is a big website with a lot of info, so we will just start off with this one. Take a few days, check it out. I realize that we can't anticipate all our need through the internet, this is just a good place to start.

Let's get things started

Hello!

As I mentioned before, I have set up this blog so that we can look at different home school options and talk amongst ourselves to see what is out there and best for our kids. As you let me know what you do and don't like about a certain type of curriculum, I will keep track and over the next few months we will see where is a good place for us to start. Lets share with family and friends, and pick the minds of those we know. I'll send out a link or two, depending on the information on the websites, and by Friday you can look through and see what you think. Look forward to hearing what you have to say!
